Make sure your child’s medicine and asthma devices are right for his or her age.

  • Know which asthma medicines are for long-term prevention and which are for quick symptom relief, so you use them at the right times.

  • If your child needs a nebulizer, ask your doctor when your child can start using an inhaler and a spacer.

  • Make sure anyone who takes care of your child (babysitter, teacher, school health staff, camp counselors, etc.) know what symptoms to look for, which medicines prevent symptoms, and which are quick relievers. They should also know how to give the medicines. Give them a copy of your child’s Asthma Action Plan (PDF Format) with this information.

  • Go over the information on how to use his or her asthma devices (inhalers and spacers, nebulizers, and peak flow meters).

  • Read the instructions with your son or daughter. Make sure he or she is using the asthma devices the right way.
