Inhalers send medicine into your airways. There are two main types:

  • Metered-dose inhalers (MDI) send a measured dose of medicine in a fine spray into your airways.

  • Dry-powder inhalers (DPI) are used for medicine that comes in powder form. You breathe in deeply to get the medicine into your airways.

Common dry-powder inhalers include Turbuhaler® and the DISKUS® Inhaler.

Follow the instructions that come with your inhaler. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist to show you how to use it.

For tips on using these devices, see Using An Inhaler.

Spacers/holding chambers

Spacers are very useful for people who have trouble using a metered-dose inhaler. Spacers can help get the medicine into their airways.

Spacers or holding chambers make it easier to use an inhaler the right way. Follow the instructions that come with your spacer. Also, have your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist show you how to use it.
