You should exercise, even if you have asthma. In fact, one of the goals of asthma treatment is to help you keep an active lifestyle. Regular exercise is important for good health.

If asthma symptoms keep you from doing physical activity, talk with your doctor. A change in your treatment plan may be all that’s needed.

Talk with your doctor about what types of exercise may work best for you.

To help control your asthma while you work out:

  • Talk with your doctor about taking medicines before you exercise.

  • Warm up and cool down after your activity.

  • If the weather is cold, wear a mask or scarf over your nose and mouth. Or, work out indoors.

  • If you have allergies, avoid outdoor activity when pollen counts are high.

  • Cut down on activity when you’re sick or tired.

  • Exercise at a level that is right for you.
