A peak flow meter measures how well air moves out of your airways.

Your peak flow readings can help tell you when you need to use your quick-relief inhaler or nebulizer. You may not even have asthma symptoms at the time. Your readings can help you prevent an attack. They can also help you and your doctor learn:

  • How severe your attack is

  • What makes your asthma get worse

  • What your triggers are and how they affect you

  • If you need to change your treatment plan

  • If you need emergency treatment

There are several types of peak flow meters. Your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist can help you decide which one to use.

For best results, follow the instructions that came with your peak flow meter. See How To Use A Peak Flow Meter to see how to get the most from your meter.
