Your asthma may seem better on weekends or holidays when youre not at work. It may get worse, if you breathe in dust, fumes, or other asthma triggers at work. These triggers may cause an asthma attack.
Talk with your doctor, if you think your workplace may cause your asthma symptoms. Common asthma triggers include:
- Flour
- Grain
- Wood dust
- Some chemicals and dyes
- Hairdressing products
- Stainless steel welding
How to prevent asthma symptoms at work
If you can, replace things that cause asthma with other safer ones. Talk about these options with your employer:
- Using masks and clothing that protect you.
- If cleaning liquids trigger your asthma, ask that the cleaning crew use less and/or switch to brands that dont bother you.
- Limit exposure to equipment that creates dangerous substances that you breathe.
- Switching to another part of the company with less exposure may help.
- If your doctor prescribed medicine to prevent symptoms, take it just as you were told. Use it, even when you feel fine.
- Always carry your quick-relief medicine with you. Keep it in your purse, desk, pocket, or anywhere you can reach it quickly.
- Use quick-relief medicine if you have any warning signs of an asthma attack. If your symptoms dont get better, excuse yourself from work and get medical help.
