These tips will help you:

  • Remove asthma triggers from your home

  • Avoid triggers that can’t be removed

Pets may be a problem

Pet dander can trigger asthma. It can spread through the house. If pets trigger your asthma, try not to let them inside. If they must come inside, make your bedroom off limits.

Try to avoid irritants and dusty environments

Paint fumes, wood dusts, and paint remover can trigger asthma. Wear a dust mask to avoid being exposed.

Use man-made fibers, not feathers

Replace feather and down-filled pillows, quilts, and cushions with those filled with man-made fibers. Also, think about having shades instead of curtains, and wood floors instead of carpets.

Don’t allow smoking inside

Cigarette, cigar, and pipe smoke are asthma triggers. They can stay in a house long after the smoker has left.

Remove mold

Moisture can make mold grow. Use a dehumidifier to keep mold from growing. If you find mold, use bleach to destroy it. If the smell of bleach is a trigger for you, wear a mask or have someone do the cleaning for you.

Get rid of dust mites

Keep your home as dust-free as you can. Cover mattresses, pillows, and box springs with zippered, dust-proof covers. Wash sheets and blankets in hot water (at least 130°F) once a week.

Air conditioning can be a good idea

If pollens and molds trigger your asthma, air conditioning may help.

Close doors and windows

Keep doors and windows shut to keep out airborne pollens and molds, especially during pollen season.
