Panic disorder causes sudden feelings of intense fear. These are called panic attacks. You may feel like youre in danger during a panic attack. Some people feel that they are losing their mind or having a heart attack.
Common symptoms
Panic attacks can cause physical symptoms like:
- Pounding heart
- Chest pains
- Feeling short of breath
- Feeling dizzy
- Tingling or numbness
- Hot flushes or chills
- Nausea
- Feeling suffocated
The strongest symptoms usually peak within 10 minutes. But some symptoms can last much longer.
Panic attacks can upset you. You may worry about having an attack, so you may stay away from things that could bring one on. Some people become so scared that they avoid all activities outside the home.
Sometimes caffeine, alcohol, or medicines can trigger panic attacks. But often the attacks come on with no warning.
