Obsessive compulsive disorder has two main parts:
1. Obsessions are thoughts, urges, or images that repeat over and over. These often happen for no reason. They can include:
- Extreme fears, like a fear of getting dirty and catching germs
- Nagging doubts, like worrying over and over that the stove is on
- Aggressive feelings, like thinking that you would harm someone
- Sexual urges that embarrass you
2. Compulsions are actions that you repeat. They help to ease the anxiety from your obsessions. Most compulsions involve doing too much:
- Washing and cleaning
- Checking, like making sure you turned off a gas grill
- Counting
- Storing
- Arranging
These actions may control anxiety for a while. But the relief usually doesnt last.
People with obsessive compulsive disorder are often too ashamed to get help. But, without treatment, it can affect your work, social life, and family. In the end, it can take over your life.
