Acute stress disorder — An anxiety disorder that involves vivid, repeated memories of a painful and upsetting event, feelings of agitation, and irritability, often leading to avoidance. Symptoms begin in the first month after the event and last up to 4 weeks.

Anxiety disorders — Certain illnesses that produce strong feelings of anxiety, worry, fear and/or avoidance in the people who have them.

Behavioral therapy — A type of counseling that teaches people to act in ways that help reduce anxiety.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy — A type of talk therapy that combines behavioral therapy with ways to help people change how they think.

Exposure therapy — A type of talk therapy in which people with phobias face the thoughts, situations, and things they fear.

Generalized anxiety disorder — An anxiety disorder that causes strong, constant feelings of worry or anxiety, often without any real cause.

Obsessive compulsive disorder — An anxiety disorder that features intense, repeated, unwanted thoughts or images, and repeated actions beyond the person’s control.

Panic attack — A sudden feeling of intense fear or discomfort that isn’t due to any real danger. Panic attacks cause a number of symptoms, like a racing heart.

Panic disorder — An anxiety disorder with symptoms that include panic attacks of anxiety or terror.

Phobias — A type of anxiety disorder that involves strong fears of things or situations that pose little or no real danger.

Posttraumatic stress disorder — An anxiety disorder that involves vivid, repeated memories of a painful and upsetting event, feelings of agitation, and irritability, often leading to avoidance.

Psychiatrists (si-KI-a-trists) — Doctors who specialize in treating mental, emotional, or behavioral disorders. They have finished four years of medical school and at least four years of postgraduate training in psychiatry. They can prescribe medicines.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy — A type of therapy that helps people with anxiety disorders to recognize and analyze unconscious thoughts and feelings stemming from past events.

Psychologists (si-KOL-o-jists) — Specialists in the mind and behavior. They usually have a PhD and get more training to work with patients. They are not medical doctors. They do evaluations, testing, and talk therapy.

Psychotherapy (si-ko-THER-a-pee) — A term for several talking therapies used to treat anxiety disorders or depression. Psychotherapy involves talking to a licensed professional during a series of appointments.

Social anxiety disorder or social phobia — An anxiety disorder that results in extreme anxiety and fear in social situations.
