Generalized anxiety disorder involves feeling very worried and anxious almost every day. These symptoms last for six months or more. You may worry too much about money, work, school, or family.

Common symptoms

Generalized anxiety disorder can include these symptoms:

  • Worry

  • Anxiety

  • Headaches

  • Feeling restless

  • Feeling grouchy

  • Trembling

  • Sleep problems

  • Tense muscles

  • Easily tired

  • Trouble concentrating

Generalized anxiety disorder sometimes starts in childhood or the teen years. It can be hard to diagnose. This is because its physical symptoms make it look like other illnesses.

People with generalized anxiety disorder sometimes have depression or another anxiety disorder, or they abuse alcohol or drugs. They may have other problems linked to stress, like irritable bowel syndrome. These symptoms may get worse when they’re stressed.
