A phobia is an intense fear of something that isn’t a real danger to you. Common phobias involve:

  • Closed-in spaces

  • Heights

  • Tunnels

  • Bridges

  • Flying

  • Driving

  • Dogs

  • Snakes

  • Insects

  • Blood-related (getting injured, seeing blood, or getting shots)

The good news is that treatment with counseling works well for phobias.

Common symptoms

  • Feeling extreme fear in certain situations or near certain objects, or even when thinking about them

  • Avoiding the thing you fear

  • Knowing your fear is extreme, but not being able to control it

If you have a phobia of something that you can avoid, it may not be a problem. But many people have phobias that limit their lives.
