It’s normal when scary or new situations worry you. Usually, when the stress goes away, the anxiety does, too.

But, if you have an anxiety disorder, you’re often worried. Anxiety follows you everywhere. It affects sleep. It disrupts your daily activities.

Common symptoms

There are several types of anxiety disorders. Each type has its own symptoms. But they all have these things in common:

  • You feel extreme fear and dread, even when there is no real danger.

  • You’re so worried that you can’t do some or most of your daily activities.

  • You try to avoid situations that bring on anxiety.

Anxiety disorders are real medical illnesses. They’re more common than you might think. Millions of American adults have some form of anxiety disorder each year.

Life with anxiety disorders

Anxiety disorders are treated with medicine, counseling (psychotherapy), or both. People respond to treatment in different ways. You may have more than one type of anxiety disorder. You may also have depression. So, treatment must fit your needs. Talk with your doctor to find what works best for you. If one treatment doesn’t work, there’s a good chance that another one will.
