With medicines and talk therapy, changes in your habits can help you manage your anxiety. Don’t expect to feel better right away. These are long-term strategies:

  • Know yourself. Try to spot situations and thoughts that bring on anxiety. Keep a journal. Write about your feelings and how you react to events. By putting your thoughts on paper, you can make the issues clearer.

  • Be positive. Challenge your negative thoughts. When you’re caught up in worry, don’t let it take over. Change the situation if you can. If you can’t, accept it and move on.

  • Don’t go it alone. Discuss your feelings with family and close friends. Tell them what you’re doing to get better. Ask them to help and urge them to learn more.

  • Have fun. Get together with friends. Go out to dinner. Take a trip to the beach. You may feel swamped by work or family duties, but don’t forget to have fun. If you take time for fun, you may deal better with your daily demands.

  • Live a healthy life. Eat a healthy diet. Limit caffeine and alcohol. Get lots of sleep and make time for exercise.

  • Learn to relax. Enjoy a warm drink that doesn’t have alcohol or caffeine. Take long walks and baths. Meditate or pray. Listen to soothing music. Get a massage.
