If someone you care about has an anxiety disorder, you can help:

  • Learn everything you can about the illness. This includes its causes, symptoms, and treatments. Once you know the problem, you can help find the answer.

  • Offer support. People with anxiety disorders can be ashamed or afraid to talk about their fears. Let your friend or loved one know you understand. Urge him or her to stick with the treatment plan that the doctor prescribed. Go along on doctor visits if you’re asked. Suggest fun things you can do together, like going to the movies or for walks.

  • Have patience. Treatment takes time. Everyone moves at his or her own pace. Stay calm and steady in your support. Praise your loved one’s efforts, even if the progress is slow. Don’t push. And, urge your loved one to stay on his or her Treatment Plan.

Avoiding burnout

Caring for someone with an anxiety disorder isn’t easy. Many family members end up feeling frustrated, scared, sad, guilty, or all of these together. Don’t be ashamed of these feelings. They’re natural. But don’t let them take over. Find someone to talk to, either a counselor or support group. And, take time off for fun. You can’t help anyone if you don’t take care of yourself.

Keep in mind that:

  • It’s okay to love the person, but hate the illness.

  • No one is to blame.

  • An anxiety disorder is nothing to be ashamed of.

  • You can’t solve your friend’s or loved one’s problem by yourself.
