Several types of counselors work with people who have anxiety, including:
- Psychiatrists
- Psychologists
- Clinical social workers
- Nurse psychotherapists
- Other professional counselors
If you dont know which type is best for you, ask your doctor for advice. Your doctor may be able to refer you to a qualified counselor. Or, ask clergy members, school counselors, the local health department, hospitals, crisis centers, or mental-health organizations near you.
Interviewing counselors
When you first call a counselor, spend some time learning about his or her treatment approach. Find out if he or she specializes in a certain area, like family counseling. If you feel comfortable with the counselor, make an appointment.
The first time you meet, he or she may ask you questions. The questions may cover not only your symptoms, but also your personal history, family, and friends. This helps the counselor assess your situation and map out a treatment plan.
After a few visits, review your progress. If youre not comfortable with your counselor at this point, talk about your feelings during a session. If you cant resolve the problem, contact another professional. Feeling comfortable with your counselor is key to your treatment success.
