Doctors can choose from several medicines to treat most anxiety disorders. You and your doctor may need to try more than one medicine to find the one that works best for you.

Some medicines need time to work. It may take a month or more before you see a difference. Be patient. Follow your doctor’s advice. If the medicine isn’t helping after a few weeks, ask your doctor about changing the dose or trying something else. Never stop taking any drug without first checking with your doctor.

Some people may have side effects with their medicine. How serious they are and how often you have them depends on you and the medicine. Talk with your doctor about the medicine he or she has prescribed for you.

To get the best from your medicine:

  • Ask your doctor about foods and drugs that may react with your medicine.

  • Tell your doctor about other medicines (prescription AND over the counter) or supplements you take.

  • Follow all instructions on the label. Call your doctor if you have questions.

  • Take doses at the same time every day.

  • Never take a prescription drug meant for someone else.

  • Don’t use medicines after the expiration date.

  • Refill your medicines before you run out.

If your medicine doesn’t seem to help, ask your doctor whether another medicine may be better for you.
