Nasal symptoms can make you feel miserable when they happen every day. Don’t give up. There is hope. Remember to take your medicine as your doctor tells you to take it. Here’s how to keep your symptoms from slowing you down:

In the car

  • During pollen season, keep the windows rolled up. Use air-conditioning instead. If you can, program your car to recycle the air.

At home or work

  • During pollen season, keep the windows and doors closed. Use air-conditioning. It can filter out mold, and lower pollen and dust levels.

  • If your home or office is humid, use a dehumidifier or air-conditioning to keep mold from growing. Clean all moldy surfaces.

  • Fix all water leaks to prevent mold.

  • Dry clothes inside. Don’t hang them outside to dry.

  • Avoid using window fans. They bring in outside air.

  • Remove rugs and wall-to-wall carpets where possible. Limit upholstered furniture. Dust mites (bugs so small that you can’t see them) live in floor coverings and furniture.

  • Remove all stuffed toys from the bedroom.

  • Wash comforters, sheets, and pillowcases often, and in hot water.

  • Take steps to keep your home free of cockroaches.

  • Cover your mattresses, box springs, and all pillows in allergy-proof casings to help keep out dust mites (bugs so small that you can’t see them).

If you live with pets

  • Don’t let your pets in the bedroom.

  • Keep pets off the furniture.

  • Bathe your pets often. Even better, ask someone else to do it.

  • Vacuum your floors and furniture often. Better yet, ask someone else to do it.

  • If your allergies are severe, think about asking a friend or family member to take care of your pet. It may be better for both of you.

While outside

  • Avoid outside exercise and other activities when pollen counts are very high. Different plants release pollen in different months.

  • Avoid mowing the lawn and raking leaves.

  • Once you come back inside, take a shower and change your clothes.
