Allergy shots are usually prescribed by a doctor who specializes in allergies. The shots are intended to help your defense system fight your allergens.

Allergy shots can be helpful. But they are not a quick fix. You may need months or years of shots. And, the treatment may not work for everyone.

Who should get them?

Allergy shots can be a good choice for you if you:

  • Have trouble avoiding your triggers.

  • Have bad nasal symptoms all year.

  • Don’t get enough relief from medicines, have trouble taking your allergy medicines, or you can’t take them regularly.

Possible side effects

The most common side effects from allergy shots are mild redness, itching, and swelling at the shot site. They usually do not last long.

A rare side effect is a severe allergic reaction. This reaction can cause trouble breathing or tightness in the throat. It may be life-threatening. If it happens, it’s usually right after an allergy shot. If you’re out of the doctor’s office and it happens, get medical help right away.
